What Is Diverticulosis ?
Here Are The Main Points In Understanding Diverticulosis.....
Diverticulosis is the condition where small pouch like formations ( known as
diverticula) form on the wall of the colon.
The condition is very common with the occurrence in men and women being equal. In people in their 40s the rate of occurrence
of diverticulosis is 5%. People in their 60s the current is 33%. Over the age of 80 over half of the population suffer from diverticulosis.
All though suffering may be the wrong word to use here as the vast majority of p.eople with diverticulosis are
totally symptom-free and need no specific treatment.
From time to time however mild symptoms can occur such as mild abdominal cramping, abdominal bloating and distension and
constipation.
The primary cause of diverticulosis at this point time is not clear. Most research points to
inadequate levels of daily fibre intake so common to our guidance in the West. An inadequate intake of daily fibre leads to the slowing of stool
movement through the intestine. Not only does the stool take longer to move its way through the intestine, but it is also harder and drier and
much smaller in size.
Stools of this kind that significant stress on intestinal wall as more effort and muscle strain is needed to force the stool
along intestines to be finally passed out of the body. This increased pressure leads to a hernia like affect in the wall of the intestine leading
to the development of diverticula.
The most common form of treatment / prevention prescribed the diverticulosis is an increase
in dietary fibre. While the diverticula themselves are not too much of a problem, diverticulosis can in some cases develop into the much more
serious diverticulitis. In order to prevent this, a high fibre diet is necessary. Additionally a high fibre diet
will ensure smooth and easy and regular bowel movements which will significantly decrease the likelihood of more diverticula developing.
